A successful conference was organised in Portugal in 1999 under the title "Glass, Art and Science". As noted by the participants at the time, that conference demonstrated a need for the international glass community to share knowledge and insight across the barriers which all too easily separate science and technology from art, conservation and design. We felt that the time was right for another congress of this kind.

This time we wish to create a focus on the applications of glass science in two areas: art and conservation. “Glass Science in Art and Conservation” will deal with a wide spectrum of issues in this field, embracing on the one hand the leading edge developments in the science of glass which can inform the art and conservation communities about what might be possible, and on the other a discussion of the practical problems facing the conservators and the ethical problems of intervention. September 19 and 20 will be entirely devoted to communications in both fields. Another two meetings will take place in Marinha Grande on September 21 and 22: Glass Art in Industry and Glass History. (For participants who do not go to Marinha Grande, visits to the glass collections in Lisbon museums have been arranged.)
